Something I’ve started to wonder is how much ideology plays a role in what types of mental illnesses”Progressive” therapists are qualified to treat
Specifically, there is significant sections of the left that do things like cast symptoms of mental illness as being response to oppression/capitalism & “your brain is not broken” & also fetishize certain mental illness symptoms such a psychosis by casting them as Western pathologizaction of “spiritual exp”
When I’ve searched for new therapist over the last few years, databases of “progressive” therapy practises often contain many profiles focussing on working with people experiencing mental health concerns because of various forms of oppression but it is extremely rare to find any therapist to have experience or training in working with people with “serious” Metal illnesses like bipolar disorders or psychotic disorders.
I was initially thinking that this had to do with what people were interested in working on but now I’m starting to wonder how much of it has to do w the left‘s sadist/ablest ideas around mental illness as somehow not real
